A Comprehensive Guide to Softwashing Cedar Roofs
Cedar roofs are a popular choice for homeowners due to their natural beauty, durability, and energy efficiency. However, like any other roofing material, cedar roofs require regular maintenance to keep them in top shape. One of the most effective ways to clean and maintain a cedar roof is through softwashing. This article will guide you through the process of softwashing cedar roofs.
What is Softwashing?
Softwashing is a cleaning method that uses low-pressure water and specialized solutions to safely remove mildew, bacteria, algae, and other organic stains from roofs and other exterior surfaces. It is a preferred method for cleaning cedar roofs because it does not cause damage to the shingles like high-pressure washing can. At Dr. Powerwash, we softwash all roofs. We never put any water pressure on the shingles of roofs. Pressure washing and power washing should never be used on a cedar roof.
Why Softwash Cedar Roofs?
Cedar roofs are prone to moss, algae, and lichen growth due to their organic nature. These growths not only affect the aesthetic appeal of the roof but can also lead to premature roof failure if not addressed. Softwashing effectively removes these growths and restores the roof's natural beauty without causing any damage. Our softwashing will kill the moss, algae, and lichen from the roof. Once the softwashing is complete, moss, algae, and lichen will no longer be able to spread into the cracks and crevices of the shingles. If allowed to spread into the cracks and crevices of a roof’s shingles, these organic materials will eventually damage and cause problems to the roof.
Steps to Softwash Cedar Roofs
- Safety First: Before starting the softwashing process, we will ensure we have the necessary safety equipment. This includes rubber gloves, safety goggles, non-slip shoes, and a safety harness if the roof is steep.
- Prepare the Softwash Solution: The softwash solution typically consists of water, sodium hypochlorite, and a surfactant. The sodium hypochlorite kills the algae, moss, and lichen, while the surfactant helps the solution stick to the roof surface for effective cleaning.
- Protect the Surrounding Area: We will wet down all of the bushes, flowers, and other flora around the house. During the softwashing process, we will continue to keep all of the shrubbery wet by spraying with water.
- Apply the Softwash Solution: Using a low-pressure sprayer, we will apply the softwash solution to the cedar roof. We will start from the top and work our way down the roof. We will ensure all areas are covered and pay special attention to heavily stained areas.
- Let the Solution Sit: We will allow the solution to work its magic and sit on the roof. This gives it time to penetrate the stains and kill the algae, moss, and lichen. The solution will not be rinsed because water pressure should not be applied to the roof. Over the course of the next couple of months all of the algae, mold, and lichen will crumble away. The roof will be noticeably cleaner, lighter, and back to a color more original to the cedar roof.
Softwashing is an effective and safe method for cleaning cedar roofs. It not only restores the roof's natural beauty but also extends its lifespan by preventing the growth of damaging organisms. If your roof is steep or high, it will be much safer and more efficient to hire a professional softwashing company. High quality equipment and expertise will allow the roof to be cleaned without causing any damage.
